Finding the perfect WordPress theme for your portfolio can be a time consuming and soul crushing experience. There are literally thousands of options available from dozens of different websites and there is such a huge range of options you really need to know what you want your portfolio website to do, as well as what you want it to look like.
Most portfolio and creative WordPress themes offer a range of options for displaying your work, like Masonry grids, video support, custom post types, etc. But if you need WooCommerce support your options are much more limited. If you want to do any sort of advanced layouts, some sort of page builder support is really important too.
But the most important consideration, at least in my book, is to ensure that the theme you choose is modern and up-to-date. Don’t spend days or weeks building a website using a WordPress theme that hasn’t been updated for two years. Pages will break, plugins won’t work and features will be missing. That’s why the first thing I look at is when the theme was last updated – if it’s been more than a few months chances are pretty good I will keep on going, no matter how much I like the theme.
