There are tons of different ways to make a great website navigation menu and WordPress themes are getting more and more creative in this aspect of theme design. However, the standard drop down menu is still the most functional, especially on a desktop computer, giving users quick access to anywhere they want to go.
But when you get to mobile devices this type of menu really falls apart. That’s where other options, like the hamburger menu really start to shine. This interface element isn’t universally understood yet (just ask your mom if she knows what it is), but it’s use is growing and users are slowly beginning to understand what the little stack of 3 lines is supposed to do.
One new and really sexy way to use the hamburger menu is with a fullscreen overlay. Huge Inc., based in Brooklyn, NY, has a really nice example on their new website. Threadslike, Long Story Short and SquareSpace are other great examples of fullscreen overlay menus in action.
Codrops has a great tutorial on how to achieve this on your own website, including the sample code and a great online demo.
WordPress Plugins
If you’re looking for a super simple way to add a fullscreen overlay menu to your WordPress website check out Jumbo ($18, CodeCanyon), a plugin that allows you to add a fullscreen overlay menu to any WordPress website. Jumbo is incredibly full featured and offered a ton of customization.
There is also the free DC – Full Screen Responsive Menu available from the WordPress Plugin Directory. DC gives you pretty basic control over colours and fonts but the menu still looks great on-screen.
WORDPRESS Themes
A lot of WordPress themes are shipping with support for fullscreen menus now too. Here re 5 themes that use either the hamburger menu or a fullscreen overlay menu to add something a bit different to website navigation.
