The YITH WooCommerce Gift Card plugin is one of the easiest, and simplest way to offer gift cards on your WooCommerce online store.
This WordPress plugin is dead simple to install and set-up, and there’s a paid-version if you are need more advanced features (seriously, the premium version’s features are insane) – check it out here. Still, all I’ve ever needed is the free version and I have never had an issue until now.
For some reason, my WooCommerce store is insisting on charging tax when someone purchases a gift card. Unfortunately, using the free version of YITH WooCommerce Gift Card plugin I could find no way to change the tax settings of a gift card so this didn’t happen. However, after some experimenting, tweaking and hair-pulling I stumbled across a quick and easy fix.
Just navigate to the Products tab in WooCommerce and use the Quick Edit feature to edit the gift certificate’s settings.
When the Quick Edit window appears all you need to do is select None in the Tax Status menu and you’re good to go.
And that’s all there is to it. You now have a YITH WooCommerce Gift Card product that can be sold tax-free. This doesn’t change how the card is used – tax is still charged on all products purchased using the gift card, this just removes the tax from the purchase of the gift card itself.
You can check out the Premium version of the YITH WooCommerce Gift Card Plugin by clicking here. There’s a great comparison between the features of the free and premium versions. I would have included a screenshot but the feature list of the premium version is just too damn long!
